In this movie based on a Thomas Hardy classic, a man of power named Michael Henchard (Ciaran Hinds) tries to hold onto what he can when his once-tidy life unravels after the public discovers that, long ago, Michael sold his wife and daughter to a sailor at a fair in a fit of drunkenness. Shamed into changing his ways, he becomes a model citizen, only to be confronted by his mistake decades later.
